Can I join MSN Dial-up over the phone?

Yes. To join over the phone, call 1-866-205-6768.

Are there any special requirements for MSN Dial-up?

Before you sign up, please confirm that your computer meets the minimum requirements and check to see if MSN Dial-Up offers local access numbers in your area (you can still sign up if there are no local numbers available, but long-distances charges may apply). If you're interested in high-speed Internet access, check out the MSN High-Speed Marketplace to comparison shop for a cable, DSL, or satellite plan from multiple providers in your local area.

How do I switch to MSN from another Internet service provider (ISP)?

In three easy steps:

  1. Choose your MSN access option: Choose either MSN Dial-up Internet access or high-speed broadband service. MSN Dial-up provides reliable dial-up access at an affordable price. Broadband gives you lightning-fast speed and always-connected convenience. Sign up now for MSN Dial-up or visit the MSN High-Speed Marketplace and find a broadband provider near you. If you'd prefer to stay with your current Internet service provider, you can still enjoy all the benefits of MSN by choosing the software-only option. MSN Internet Software includes parental controls, a smart junk e-mail filter, and all the other features of MSN at a low monthly price.
  2. Move your data: Once you've installed the MSN Internet Software, MSN gives you two powerful tools to transfer information (like your address book) into your new MSN account:
    • The MSN Import Wizard makes it easy to import information from your old account that’s on your hard drive. You can copy your e-mail messages and address book entries from Outlook Express, plus your favorites from Internet Explorer or AOL. The Import Wizard is available for all versions of Microsoft Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, and AOL versions 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x.
    • TrueSwitch* allows you to transfer all your Web-based information from other ISPs, including AOL. You can copy your old e-mail, address book, and calendar entries.  You can even send a personalized e-mail to everyone in your address book announcing your new e-mail address, and get free e-mail forwarding service for one month.
  3. Cancel your previous account: You are responsible for canceling your old Internet account to avoid incurring any additional charges. First, make sure your new MSN account is up and running by checking your contacts and sending test e-mails to friends and family. Next, contact your ISP to cancel your old account. Please see the cancellation information listed below for major Internet service providers.

How do I transfer my e-mail contacts, calendar, and Internet favorites from AOL?

If you're switching from AOL, the TrueSwitch* service included with MSN automates all the tasks you would have to do manually when switching. Use the TrueSwitch Importing Service if you would like to transfer your AOL information (such as e-mail, address book, and calendar entries) to your new MSN account. You won't have to re-enter your information when you switch, because TrueSwitch handles it for you! The TrueSwitch service will copy all stored information on AOL 5.0 through the latest 7.0 versions. For more information about the TrueSwitch service, please visit the TrueSwitch Web site. TrueSwitch currently only supports the switch from AOL to MSN. However, MSN Internet software can help you import e-mail, address book contacts, and Internet favorites from Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.

Can I still use AOL chat rooms?

Yes. When you download the AOL Instant Messenger client, you will still be able to access some of the chat rooms available on AOL. You should also check out the hundreds of chat rooms on MSN Chat, available as a subscription service.

What will happen to my AOL buddy list if I cancel AOL?

You can still access your AOL buddy list by downloading the free AOL Instant Messenger client from the America Online Web site.

Can I still send instant messages to my friends on AOL?

Yes. You have two options for instant messaging with your friends on AOL. The first option is to download the free AOL Instant Messenger client from America Online.

If you are looking for a more exciting way to send instant messages, the other option is to download Windows Live Messenger. It's easy to use and lets you communicate with the millions of people in the United States who have an e-mail address ending with either @hotmail.com or @msn.com. You can use your new e-mail address to access Windows Live Messenger, and you can even communicate with your AOL friends if they sign up for a free MSN Hotmail account or a free Microsoft Passport Network account so they can also use Windows Live Messenger. It's free, it's fun, and you can download it from the Windows Live Messenger Web site.

Is there a less expensive plan for people who don't use the Internet much?

Our metered plan gives you 20 hours of Internet access for $14.95 and $1.50 for each additional hour per month, plus tax. See plan details.

Will I miss any e-mail messages when I switch to MSN?

MSN helps you avoid missing messages when you switch. One month of free e-mail forwarding is included with TrueSwitch,* a service that helps AOL customers switch to MSN in three easy steps.

Can I use Outlook Express or Outlook for e-mail when I sign up for MSN?

Yes, Outlook Express and Outlook XP are compatible with MSN e-mail. However, Outlook 2000, 98, and 97 are not. For information about using Outlook Express, review the online Help provided in the software. To start Help for Outlook Express:

  • Open Outlook Express
  • On the Help menu, click "Contents and Index"

What are Parental Controls, and how do I set them up?

MSN Parental Controls help you decide how your children use the Internet. You can filter Web content and stay informed with a weekly activity report. In order to set up the controls, the primary account holder (the person paying for the MSN account) must sign into MSN. Then under "Help & Settings," choose "Member Accounts and Billing" and then select "Add a Secondary Account." (Up to 10 additional users can be added and are included in your MSN subscription cost.) Then you can customize the parental controls settings for each user through an easy guided process.

Can a child use a different browser to get around parental control settings?

No. If a parent turns on content control in Web-based programs, a child will not be able to use another browser on that PC to get around the settings.
